The Arc of Horry County is a volunteer advocacy association that has worked since 1963 on behalf of children and adults with mental retardation and lifelong disabilities. We are committed to securing a high quality of life for all people in Horry County by joining with individuals served families, friends, neighbors, schools, business employers, government, faith communities and health care providers.
We were organized in 1963 by a few parents and professionals that were friends of people with disabilities. The need for such an organization was started through the grandmother and parents of Kim Rosenberg. Because of their love and dedication many others have benefited. A class of seven children was the first priority of the group following the National Arc pushing for mandatory special education. In 1979, the Arc identified a need for additional services for children leaving the school system. An adult developmental center was then established as well as residential facilities. Today the Horry County Disabilities and Special Needs Program administers those programs. Our focus has expanded to services listed below.
